The Discovery Sport is the most affordable SUV from the Land Rover stable on sale today, and was introduced as a replacement to the LR2 (the Freelander) in 2015. The car looks stylish, proportional and is smartly turned out. Though it retains the overall new-age Land Rover styling, it gets its own characterization like the uniquely styled LED DRLs in the headlamp and the tail lamps. The wheels too fill the wheel arches rather well, making for a smart-looking SUV.
Inside, the Land Rover family design theme continues, with a stitched-leatherette dashboard, clean minimalistic detailing and metallic trim to highlight the interior design. There is a mix of soft-touch surfaces and hard plastics, and there is adequate space in the front two rows, but the optional third row seats feel pretty tight on space.
Under the hood, there is a 2.0L 4-cylinder diesel mill that is available in two states of tune – 148HP and 380Nm of torque or 178HP and 430Nm of torque – both the engines can be had with either a 6-speed manual or a brilliant 9-speed automatic transmission. There is also a 2.0L turbocharged petrol engine that makes 237HP and 365Nm of torque that is available only with the 9-speed AT. Being a Land Rover, all variants get 4WD as standard, however a low range gearbox is not present – thus limiting the Discovery Sport’s off-road capabilities. The well-weighed steering offers good feedback, and thus the Discovery Sport is a decent SUV to drive – despite its tall SUV proportions. Also, the ride quality is not too stiff and the Discovery Sport rides pretty flat on highways too.
Available in Pure, SE, HSE and HSE Luxury variants, there is quite a range of Discovery Sports to choose from. However safety features such as ABS with EBD, dual front airbags with side, curtain and also knee airbags, hill start assist with hill descent control, ESP, TCS, roll stability control, Emergency brake assist, trailer stability control and ISOFIX child seat anchors are standard across the range.
