The current fourth generation Wrangler with two and four-door bodystyles represents itself comfortably in compact and mid-size segments. Introduced in 2018, the JL features a host of new features including: additional powertrains over the Pentastar 285 hp V6, new 8-speed automatic transmission, easier fold-flat windshield and soft top designs, and modernised interior. Powertrains for the 2018 model included both the 270hp 2.0-litre turbo charged engine and the 285hp Pentastar V6.
The 2018 Jeep Wrangler 2-door model is available in three different trim configurations: Sport, Sport S and Rubicon. Wrangler 4-door models are available in four different trim configurations: Sport, Sport S, Sahara and Rubicon. The model spread may vary according to markets.
Key improvement included enhancement of interior space and rear passenger leg room especially on the 4-door version. The structural rigidity has also improved by using higher strength steel and flab reduced by using aluminium in the roof and door panels. This helps the body-on-frame Wrangler shed up to 45 kg from the outgoing model and still retains the manual ability for removing body panels.
Wrangler now features a traditional clamshell hood with new distinctive hood latches, while the dual-vented Power Dome hood is standard on Rubicon models. LED headlamps and fog lamps are available on Sahara and Rubicon models. Jeep offers seven wheel designs in sizes ranging from 17 to 18 inches.
7-in or available 8.4-inch touchscreen houses the fourth-generation Uconnect system and now sits prominently atop the center stack. A 5-inch touchscreen is standard on Wrangler Sport. Directly below the touchscreen are functional features such as climate and volume control knobs and media connectivity ports.
The instrument display cluster features a 3.5- or 7-inch thin-film transistor (TFT) information LED display. The 7-inch configurable LED display allows the driver to configure displayed information, such as current media being played, tire-pressure monitoring, or digital speed readout. Integrated buttons on the steering wheel control audio, voice, and speed functions, and allow the driver to keep their hands on the wheel. Wrangler Sahara and Rubicon models now feature a telescope/tilt steering wheel function.
The electronically assisted steering has now been replaced with hydraulic set-up.
For the first time in Wrangler’s history, a two-speed transfer case with full-time four-wheel drive and a 2.72:1 low-range gear ratio that is available on Sahara models. This new Selec-Trac full-time two-speed transfer case is intuitive and allows the driver to set it and forget it, while constantly sending power to the front and rear wheels.
On the Rubicon models, a Rock-Trac 4×4 system features heavy duty next-generation Dana 44 front and rear axles with a “4LO” ratio of 4:1. A 4.10 front and rear axle ratio is standard as are Tru-Lok locking differentials.
