Introduction

The Nissan Altima has been the cornerstone of Nissan’s offerings in the midsize saloon segment. From humble beginnings in 1992 to its present avatar, the Altima has come a long way. Every generation since 1992 has had something new to offer hitherto never seen in the segment. For its sixth generation, Nissan has given the globally popular sedan autonomous driving capabilities, albeit at a rudimentary level for now.

2019 Nissan Altima plays the field against cars like Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, and Volkswagen Passat in UAE.

Exterior

Nissan has placed its signature V-Motion grille on the Altima, dominating the car’s front fascia. Headlamps and taillamps are all-LED and feature new signature DRLs for 2019. At 4,901mm, 1,850mm, and 1,447mm, the sixth-gen Nissan Altima is longer, wider, and taller than its predecessor.

The sedan body type is still very much in vogue, and Nissan understands that. The Altima is cutting-edge and modern for 2019.

Featuring a sleeker design than before, the 2019 Nissan Altima benefits from expressive styling built on over 25 years of heritage. Optional 19-inch wheels accentuate the sedan’sĀ purposeful stance and design. Finally, despite adopting the traditional three-box sedan silhouette, the Altima manages to be quite the eye-catcher.

Interior

There is a reason the Nissan Altima is one of the most popular sedans in UAE. The four-door car is roomy and airy on the inside, with a fully digital instrument cluster and touchscreen infotainment system. The instrument panel is wide, and the choice of trim lends the cabin a pleasant aura.

The car features Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility, accessible via the 8-inch colour touchscreen. The seats get additional bolstering for improved holding and support. Aside from these updates, there are the usual luxury features that a car of this segment is expected to offer as standard.

Nissan has bolstered Altima’s seats and added new electronics to the existing package.

Buyers also benefit from a full suite of Nissan Intelligent Mobility technologies. ProPilot Assist, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Warning, Radar-assisted Blind Spot Warning, High Beam Assist- all these systems are part of the package that also includes autonomous driving capability.

Performance

Two new engines are part of the 2019 Nissan Altima’s powertrain lineup. A new 2.5-litre inline-four replaces the outgoing Altima’s 3.5-litre V6, generating more power and torque. Nissan has developed a turbocharged higher-strung version of the engine, claiming it to be the world’s first production-ready variable compression turbo inline-four.

This VC-Turbo engine also scores rather well on the NVH (noise, vibration, and harshness) charts. It also performs on par with the old V6, all the while returning better fuel efficiency and reduced emissions. Nissan claims the VC-Turbo, mated to a CVT, is good for a power output north of 250hp, with 380Nm of twist on tap.

Nissan claims a combined fuel efficiency of 12.3kpl of the Altima, but your mileage may vary depending upon the driving pattern.

Bold, stately, and purposeful: the 2019 Nissan Altima’s design is superbly expressive.

Verdict

The 2019 Nissan Altima is priced from AED 89,000 for the base trim with a 2.0-litre mill, going up to AED 121,800 for the VC-Turbo model.
