Cadillac has been on a roll with its newfound capability of building all-new engines from the ground up and has patented a new logo, possibly for the Blackwing V8, its latest creation.

Brands at GM aren’t faring exactly well at this point in the automotive industry, with most of them not having had built a new engine in-house for a long time. Cadillac is bucking the trend within the GM brand portfolio with a new range of engines powering its various models. After debuting the stellar 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol motor that powers the 2019 XT4 crossover, the American carmaker has filed trademark applications depicting a new logo.

GM Authority first brought the filings to light, the logo on which shows “two stylized wings comprised of six elongated geometric shapes” forming a V in the middle. The trademark filing has been reserved for use on engines for automobiles, SUVs, and trucks which will get Blackwing V8 power.

The Blackwing 4.2-litre twin-turbocharged DOHC V8 currently sits under the Cadillac CT6-V’s hood, making (at least) 550hp and 850Nm according to the company. It is paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission on board the super saloon. Cadillac might also use the engine to power cars like the Escalade, CT5-V, and maybe even the upcoming Chevrolet mid-engined C8 Corvette. After all, it does have the specifications suitable for a Corvette successor.

Why do we think Cadillac will plonk the motor in more than one models? Well, going to the trouble of filing for a trademark application and creating a new logo with a cool name to go with it is not too sensible a move unless the logo is meant for multiple performance-oriented models coming under the Blackwing name. We fervently hope Cadillac is seriously considering powering more of its models with the V8, because the name ‘Escalade Blackwing’ sounds ridiculously cool.
